Jenny + Caleb’s Boulder Winter Engagement
I was so excited to meet up with Jenny and Caleb for their engagement session in February. I’ll be photographing their wedding at the Donovan Pavilion in Vail this September, and doing a shoot together before the wedding is such a great way to get to know each other! I know every photographer says this, but it really does help make sure the wedding day goes smoothly. (And that I’m not just some stranger with a camera who shows up as you’re getting ready 😉
They really wanted to bring their dog Cooper along for some of the photos, and I LOVE getting to meet my couples’ dogs. We settled on one of my favorite dog-friendly engagement locations in Boulder County. And while it was crazy windy and cold (as always), we also got the best afternoon light I’ve had of any shoot this winter!
We started with some snuggly photos with the little Colorado family of three in the woods. Cooper was utterly confused by the stranger with a camera who was hanging out with them, and why he could just run through the deep snow at me. When he’d had enough of the cold, he got to snuggle back up in the warm car, while the humans hiked in to a frozen alpine lake for more photos.
One of my absolute favorite parts of shooting Boulder winter engagement sessions is that you don’t need to hike far to get epic landscapes. The hike to this lake is only about 15 minutes from the parking lot, and yet you’re in the middle of the mountains with epic views in every direction! And few things beat sliding around on ice with your partner for keeping warm in the cold winter weather 😉
Towards the end of the session, we found a spot for Jenny and Caleb to cuddle up together on the thick wool blanket they had brought. Then just as they were getting cozy, a huge gust of wind came through and blew ALL the loose snow onto them! The way the snow caught in the sun beams was insanely beautiful, so we decided to stick around and hope for another gust of wind to get the same photos without them shrieking away from the snow … and of course that made the wind die down. You really can’t control the Colorado weather!
If you’re planning a Boulder winter engagement session, I’d love to take you to one of my many secret spots in the area for epic views – with or without the crazy wind-snow! Get in touch and let’s make it happen!
