Sarah + Richard’s Canoeing Engagement Session
When I first started talking to Sarah and Richard about their winter engagement session, we were throwing around different locations and ideas. Then when I asked what they like doing together, they mentioned that they have a canoe and a kayak that they love taking out. I’ve been wanting to photograph a canoeing engagement session for a while now, and so we got to planning!
We knew finding the perfect body of water would be the biggest challenge, as we were shooting in December. Most of the lakes I first thought of would be frozen over by then! With a little help from Instagram location tags to see recent photos in different places, we finally settled on one of my favorite places in Colorado: Twin Lakes near Leadville. (I actually photographed a camping engagement session here the year before!)
Since Twin Lakes is a 2.5h drive from Boulder, it only made sense for me to combine the trip with snowboarding at Copper that morning with my husband. He came along to help carry the canoe and kayak afterwards, and it was also nice having someone watching us from shore in case something should go wrong. You might not be able to tell from the photos, but I was actually on the water in the kayak, while photographing Sarah and Richard’s canoeing engagement session!
Most of the Twin Lakes were already frozen over for the winter, but there was a perfect ice-free opening for us. And being on the water while hearing the ice creaking around us was such a surreal experience! Good thing I grew up kayaking in the Atlantic and can handle the cold 😉
Sarah and Richard recently moved to Colorado from Oklahoma, and are getting married back in Tulsa next October. I laughed when I got Sarah’s first email, where she asked if I was available for their engagement photos, and if I possibly wanted to shoot their wedding at the Tulsa Botanic Gardens …. “but I can understand not wanting to go to Oklahoma. It’s not the most exciting place.” (Sarah’s words, not mine!)
I truly love visiting new places, and some of my favorite travel memories come from the most random places that I had no high expectations for, so of course I was down to travel to Tulsa for them. And based on how much fun we had together for their canoeing engagement session, I have a feeling I’ll have a great time in Tulsa too!
If you’re interested in booking an adventurous engagement session in Colorado (with or without canoeing ;-), get in touch and let’s make it happen!
