Jessica + Paul’s Hiking Engagement Session
One of my absolute favorite parts of working as a Colorado hiking engagement photographer, is finding the perfect hike for each of my couples. Reusing the same locations over and over again is a pet peeve of mine – there are more gorgeous locations in Boulder than just Chautauqua! There are so many factors going into picking a location that fits the couple, from the time of year, time of day, what part of Colorado the couple wants to shoot, if they want a short hike or long, if they want mountain views or deep woods, if they want an alpine lake or a winding river … and on the list goes!
When Jessica and Paul reached out to me via Instagram to book a hiking engagement session, Jessica asked if I knew of any old wooden barns or similar buildings to use for some of their photos. They originally wanted a short hike in the Boulder area, but when I told her that I had the perfect place in mind that was a 5 mile round trip hike up by Nederland, they decided to trust me with it and off we went.
We met on a cold and windy afternoon in December, and spent the first half of our hike getting to know each other. I love taking this time to just chat instead of stopping for photos, because it helps us all relax when it’s time to bring out the camera. Now I really wish I had been filming their faces when we rounded the final corner of the trail, and saw the old mining buildings in front of us. Jessica was so excited about the main bunk house cabin, and we spent the next hour exploring the old buildings and the abandoned mine. We were guessing at what life must have been like up there for miners in the early 20th century – especially on a cold day like this – before hiking back down under the most beautiful peach colored sunset sky.
If you’re looking for a Colorado hiking engagement photographer, I’d love for you to reach out so I can help pick the perfect hike for you! (Also check out my post with 23 of my favorite Boulder engagement session locations!)
