Christen + Anthony’s Devil’s Thumb Ranch Wedding
One of my absolute favorite weddings to photograph this season was Christen and Anthony’s Devil’s Thumb Ranch winter wedding. I’ve been dreaming about photographing a wedding at Devil’s Thumb Ranch since, well, since before I started photographing weddings. It’s easily one of the most gorgeous wedding venues in Colorado, and they happen to have great trails for cross-country skiing in winter which is how I first heard out about this place.
While this wedding took place in the middle of October, the temperature kept dropping as I drove up from Boulder to Tabernash. By the time I arrived at the venue, it was well below freezing, and heavy clouds had gathered. Now you might think I was hoping for sunshine and blue skies, but clouds are actually great for photos since they act like a natural soft box and diffuse the otherwise harsh light. When the first snow flakes started falling just as Christen was getting into her Vera Wang gown, I was pretty near giddy with excitement.
The couple chose to do their first look right outside of the ranch house where they had been getting ready, and shared a few quiet moments there before jumping into a car with us and the videographers to find the perfect spot for their portraits. We drove around the expansive property before ducking into the woods for some photos among the evergreen trees. Devil’s Thumb Ranch is gorgeous all year round, but even more so with heavy snowflakes coming down in winter. I love how natural their photos came out, with them snuggling up for warmth and just taking in the fact that they were soon to be married.
Since the temperature kept dropping, the ceremony was moved from the big lawn outside to an indoor location, which presented some challenges for the photo & video team as we had to each pick a spot and not move at all during the ceremony, but when capturing such heartfelt vows none of that matters in the end. After the ceremony the guests moved inside the big ranch house to an impeccably styled room by Love This Day Events, with florals by House of Yonder. We snuck the couple outside for a few more portraits right as the sun was setting, providing the most beautiful alpenglow on the snowcapped mountains, then ended the night with toasts and dancing.
If you’re planning a Devil’s Thumb Ranch winter wedding (or any other time of year, really 😉 and are looking for a photographer, get in touch so we can chat about your big day!
