Julia + Ryan’s Dream Lake Winter Engagement
The story of how I worked with Julia and Ryan starts very differently from my normal sessions: I got a message from a photographer friend who had gotten really sick, asking if I could take over photographing a Dream Lake winter engagement session – that same afternoon!
Normally I have at least a few weeks before a session to chat with the couple and discuss our location. So I called Julia right away to make sure she was okay with the change in photographers, and luckily she was still excited for a cold hike for their Dream Lake winter engagement session.
I met Julia and Ryan at the Bear Lake trailhead that afternoon, and we set out on the very icy hike to Dream Lake. There had been a lot of snow the week before, then a warm week, then a cold day, so parts of the trail truly felt like an ice rink. I had my microspikes, and after this session I actually went straight to REI and bought two extra pairs to bring along to my adventure sessions in the future!
Dream Lake winter engagement sessions are only for the brave at heart, because it can be incredibly cold and windy on the frozen lake. Julia and Ryan were such great sports about the weather, and we stayed warm by running (or more like sliding) around on the lake while laughing too hard. You know that giddy feeling you get when something is kinda insane but in a way that makes you feel alive? Yeah, that was this hike.
Huge thanks to Mallory for sending me such a sweet couple, and to Julia and Ryan for being down for a true adventure on their Dream Lake winter engagement session!
