Tilly + Kris’ Wedding at SmogShoppe in Los Angeles
I first photographed Tilly and Kris together for their Palm Springs engagement session, and soon after they booked me to capture their SmogShoppe wedding in Los Angeles where they live. Normally I don’t take on many destination weddings, but I was happy to make an exception for these two cuties. I travel out to LA at least once or twice a year, and it’s such a nice break from Colorado winters! (And I’m finally starting to feel familiar with the mess that is traffic out there…)
Tilly and I have known each other for years now, and I already knew two of her bridesmaids (and even more of their guests), so the whole weekend felt like a big reunion. And I think she might just be the least stressed bride I’ve ever worked with – she had her final dress fitting on her wedding day! When I showed up for getting ready photos that morning, she told me they had hired mostly people they knew, so they could trust us all to do our thing. The hair and makeup artists, their florist, their musicians, and their day-of coordinator were all friends!
One of the biggest challenges when photographing a destination wedding is being able to location scout before the wedding day. I came out to Los Angeles two days before their SmogShoppe wedding, in order to get familiar with the Culver City area. (Okay, and for an excuse to go to the beach in March! I can never say no to an opportunity to stick my feet in the ocean.) Tilly and Kris had already done some location scouting themselves. So I was able to combine their suggestions with driving and walking around the neighborhood to find some cute spots for photos.
Although my favorite location was shooting at the venue itself! The SmogShoppe wedding venue takes “industrial chic” to a whole new level. The open courtyard is enclosed by live plant walls, which makes it feel like you’re surrounded by nature even when you’re in the middle of a huge city. And their florist Erin knocked it out of the park with the bride’s bouquet and the ceremony aisle decor! All the florals looked like they belonged on the walls!
I think that my favorite moment from Tilly and Kris’ SmogShoppe wedding was their first dance. One of their friends had surprised them with a smoke machine, and the effect was absolutely stunning. (Make sure you scroll to the bottom to see the photos!)
Shoutouts to all the fabulous vendors who helped make Tilly and Kris’ wedding at SmogShoppe such a beautiful day!
