Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild Wedding Venue
Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild wedding venue | French Riviera destination elopement photographer
I first came across the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild wedding venue in a feature in French Wedding Style magazine’s blog – the best resource out there with wedding inspiration for eloping in France! As I was planning a vacation to the French Riviera myself, I knew that I had to visit this pink villa to see for myself if it was as beautiful in person as online. And it did not disappoint!
Located between Nice and Monaco, near the picturesque small town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild wedding venue could not be more perfectly located for a French Riviera elopement. It’s an easy drive from either town, and there are also a lot of beautiful vacation rental homes to choose from that are even closer to the villa if you don’t want to have to worry about your guests driving home after a long night of drinking champagne in the gardens.
While the villa and gardens are open to the public during the daytime, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild wedding venue is often closed for private weddings and elopements in the evenings. I came here on a weekday in April, and there were no more than a few dozen people wandering the expansive gardens. With so many narrow trails and hidden corners of the gardens, it felt much more private than I expected for such a popular destination.
The highlight of the day was the view of the pink villa with the long shallow pool and fountains in the foreground, as best seen from the small hill at the end of the gardens. Every twenty minutes, the fountains started up in a water show that reminded me of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, but in a much more subdued and elegant – aka French – way! It was set to a lovely musical arrangement, and I could have sat there staring at the water for hours. The fountain show would surely be the highlight of any Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild wedding celebration!
The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild wedding venue was originally built in 1907 for Béatrice de Rothschild, the daughter of one of the richest men in France, who married a Parisian banker with a serious gambling problem. After their divorce, Béatrice turned to collecting art and antiques, includes several pieces that had belonged to Marie Antoinette. When Béatrice passed away from tuberculosis in the 1930s, she left the villa to a cultural organization in France, trusting them with the protection and use of the space. I listened to her whole story as part of a self-guided audio tour through the villa, and have to say she led a most fascinating life!
These days you can rent the formal French Gardens, the oriental dining room, or the gorgeous grand patio – the first room you’ll enter in the villa, for your French Riviera wedding celebrations. Personally I don’t see why anyone would choose to remain inside when you could have an outdoor dinner in the well manicured gardens, with views of the ocean to either side and the mountains behind the villa!
