Amy + Megan’s Colorado Winter Hiking Engagement
Winter Hiking Engagement | Colorado Adventure Wedding Photographer
When Amy and Megan told me that they LOVE (yes, capital letters!) all things outdoor, and that some of their favorite activities are snow hikes and cross country skiing with their dog Cooper, I knew a winter hiking engagement session would be perfect for them. Since they live in Vail, and I in Boulder, we had a huge range of hiking trails to choose from. I had recently hiked to Mayflower Gulch near Copper Mountain and Leadville, and was dying to bring a couple up there for an engagement session. I showed Amy and Megan a few photos, and they both agreed it looked like the perfect spot, so off we went!
The conversation flowed easily as we hiked the two mile trail up to the old Boston Mining Company cabins at the top of Mayflower Gulch, and I loved getting to know more about both Amy and Megan. I don’t know how I keep getting so lucky, but every one of the couples whose engagements I’ve photographed this winter have felt like long-lost friends, and these two were no exception. We talked about our favorite travels, how we all found ourselves in Colorado, how they met at a bar in Denver on Megan’s birthday and instantly hit it off, how Megan first proposed with a custom crossword puzzle and an engagement ring, and Amy returned the proposal with an engagement mountain bike, and before we knew it we were out of the woods and taking in the breathtaking views in front of us.
I don’t think either Amy or Megan will hold it against me if I say my favorite part of their winter hiking engagement photography session was getting to know their dog Cooper. He was having so much fun running around in the snow, and kept walking in to the photos with a look on his face like “hey, why are you all standing still and looking at that camera when you could be playing in the snow with me”? So we played around in the snow too, and Amy learned the hard way that the snow was WAY deeper by the cabins than on the main trail, when she tried to give Megan a piggyback ride and sank down to her waist!
After we wrapped up their winter hiking engagement, we headed down to Frisco for a hot drink (mmm, Irish Coffee!) and queso (mmm, cheese!), and it truly felt like I had known Amy and Megan for years instead of hours. I have a feeling I’ll be hiking with these two again!
